Neal Von Flue is an artist, educator, and writer living in Southern California.

He has designed books, board games, albums, posters, and magazines. He co-created the graphic novel Labor & Love: A Garland of American Folk Ballads with Sam Costello. In 2025, he published a retrospective of his work from the previous decade called Sweeping Up After the Party is Over.

He has been a multidisciplinary art teacher for nearly two decades. His new book The Creativity Diagram: The Theory of a Creative Ecosystem is a breakdown of the raw materials artists can use to develop ideas. Part theory and part field guide, it charts the creative environment, providing a method for artists in any medium to think differently about their process. It’s available in print and digital formats wherever you get books.

In the early days of the internet he made visually rich webcomics with an emphasis on nonlinear storytelling and pioneered visual navigation in the digital environment. An archive of his webcomic work can be found at www.hypercomics.net.
